Southerland’s Seat is Targeted by the DCCC

Sophomore Congressman, Steve Southerland has his work cut out for him in 2014.

This morning, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee named 16 new House candidates to its “Red to Blue” program. According to the DCCC the “program highlights top Democratic campaigns across the country, and offers them financial, communications, grassroots, and strategic support.”

Making the list was, Rep. Southerland’s opponent, Gwen Graham. Graham is the daughter of former Florida Senator, Bob Graham. Graham is challenging incumbent Rep. Southerland in Florida’s 2nd Congressional district.

Rep. Southerland was originally elected as part of the Tea Party movement that swept the 2010 mid-term elections. Southerland has served the 2nd Congressional District for the past 3 years.

Heading into an re-election year, Southerland faces a tough race. His seat has been marked as a target by the DCCC and Graham is the candidate, Democrats are hoping will be able to pull off a victory in November. However, this isn’t a race Southerland or the GOP will take lightly. Outside interest groups including, American’s for Prosperity, have already poured money into the district backing Rep. Southerland; showcasing him as a steadfast opponent of Obamacare.

It is safe to say, just because Graham’s name made the “Red to Blue” list and is the daughter of a former Senator doesn’t mean she’ll take home a win in November.
